ACHIEVEMENTS
Short Courses: For the first time in the history of Kumi University, the Department of Social Sciences in conjunction with the Department of Business Studies started Short courses (Certificate) for skill development. These were in Project Planning and Management, Monitoring and Evaluation and Public Administration. This programme was for a period of one month and was successful.
Review of the Curriculum: the curriculum had taken more than five years without being reviewed and so, this was done from 17th -20th /September/2014. Although the process is not yet complete, all the cross-cutting course units were streamlined and codes assigned by the originating department. The process is still on and will be completed since it requires a lot of time.
Research Proposal Mini-defense: The Department has been able to ensure that all students doing research defend their Research proposals in abide to prove originality and as a way of ensuring quality research is done.
Research Unit: the department played a fundamental role in the formulation of the Research Centre which had never been in existence. As a result staff are now involved in Research and have had publications; this has and is still publicizing Kumi University.
CHALLENGES
Short Courses: The continuity of the short courses is not certain as the facilitators have not been paid up to date and so they are discouraged in continuing with the prorgramme. This was after a proposal of payment by the Department was rejected by Top management and there has been no clear communication on this matter.
Weekend Programme: Non prompt payment of Lecturers facilitating the Weekend programme has had a negative effect on the programme. This explains why students have not received all the Lectures for semester one 2014/2015 as required. Due to this, some course units have been differed to the next semester.
Internet: the department does not have internet and so it has affected quality research as staff have to find their on internet else where which affects delivery.
Chairs: this is a big challenge the department is experiencing and it has affected lectures. This is because if a lecture is not start at 8:00am, the students have to take off 3o minutes to look for and settle for the 30 minutes late.
Inadequate Financial Support to Research: the staff carrying out research for publication have not received adequate support from the institution and this is for the benefit of the institution as well. Considering the cost of research, some members have missed conferences because of funding and yet this would have been a good opportunity for the university.
PRAYER POINTS
- Stability of the weekend programme
- Continuity of the short courses
- Increase in students numbers at the department
- Institutionalize Research
- New computer set
